1946

To ensure reliable supply, the Nassau-Suffolk Bakers Association decides to buy their local distributor and form a co-operative after the distributor informs them that he no longer wants to be in the business. Henry Heim, an Association member with over 40 years experience and the owner of a successful bakery in Baldwin, Long Island, assumes a leading role in the co-op and eventually becomes its full-time president.

Inter-County has grown significantly as a result of wider ingredient choice, responsive service and volume buying power. Henry Heim teams up with three more co-op members - comprising the "four bakers" in the Inter-County company logo - and together they make a significant investment in the co-op in order to fund additional expansion.

Henry's son, Ted Heim Sr., is completing National Guard service when he gets a call from his dad inviting him to join the firm. Ted Sr. begins his journey to Inter-County's presidency as a salesman with a 5-run route... back by noon to unload and set up for the next day. Ted Sr. meets and marries Marilyn, an outstanding customer service rep who had been hired by Henry. Marilyn Heim will play a major role at Inter-County for over 50 years, supporting Ted Sr., and eventually Ted Jr. as well, as they build the company.

Inter-County continues to grow as it expands its service area beyond Long Island. Henry and Ted Sr. are supported by a service staff and drivers who are effective, efficient and deeply committed. However, the original co-op members are getting older and understandably want to retire and enjoy the benefits of their labor.

Ted Sr., now president, devises an ingenious stock plan that enables the original co-op members to exit while making Inter-County financially stronger. Ted emerges as a leading spokesperson for the industry and the winner of major industry awards. Inter-County's geographic footprint and reputation for outstanding service continue to grow.

We've got the freezer! Inter-County invests in a 100'L x 14'W x 24'H freezer. A centerpiece of the Inter-County headquarters and warehouse in West Hempstead, the freezer enables the firm to significantly build on its retail bakery customer base and become a pioneer in the growing market for frozen bakery goods.

Ted Heim Jr. joins Inter-County after earning his degree in Finance from Siena College and begins his successful journey to Inter-County CEO. Initially focused on sales and systems, Ted eventually becomes expert in all areas of the business and leads the company through its growth and transformation from successful local distributor to a tri-state distribution leader.

Inter-County moves to a larger and more modern facility in Lindenhurst, Long Island. Ted Sr. hires VP Sales Andy Hislop to further expand Inter-County's geographic footprint and its presence in frozen while ensuring continued great service to its retail bakery customers.

The Heim family purchases the Inter-County co-operative and makes additional investments in sales and support staff, drivers, warehouse management and technology that underlie the firm's continued growth, service leadership and geographic expansion.

Inter-County begins servicing former customers of F&S Bakery Suppliers, headed by Joe Pontillo, adding over 400 bakeries and bagel stores to the Inter-County customer base. Joe continues to serve those customers - and many more - for Inter-County today.

Ted Jr.'s son Jeremy Heim joins Inter-County as a data analyst after graduating from Niagara University. Jeremy represents the fourth generation of the Heim family, who have successfully managed and grown Inter-County for over 67 years. CEO Ted Heim Jr., President Ted Heim Sr., and now Jeremy Heim are working together to lead the company forward, supported by the very best management team, sales and support staff and drivers in the industry.

Inter-County relocates to a larger, 115,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art headquarters and warehouse in nearby Deer Park, Long Island, NY. The new location features industry-leading logistics, software and warehouse management systems that enable even greater brand and ingredient choice and even better customer service.
